25 Recommended Downtown Austin Restaurants
Sometimes, when people visit Austin for the weekend, or for events like SXSW, they decide not to rent a car if they are staying downtown. Downtown Austin used to be sort of a ghost town as far as great restaurants went, with a few sprinkled here and there, but not enough to sustain even a weekend visitor very easily. Luckily, Austin is growing like mad, and new restaurants are opening every week.
For the Austin City Guide, I’ve pulled together a list of my top 25 downtown restaurants, with “downtown” in this case being bordered by 15th to the North, Lady Bird Lake to the South, I-35 to the East, and Lamar to the West.
Without further ado, here are my top 25 downtown Austin restaurant recs:
24 Diner 600 Lamar
Banger’s 79 Rainey
The Bonneville 202 W. Cesar Chavez

Restaurant recommendations just beyond the downtown self-defined border:
A few blocks North of 15th
The Carillon at the AT&T Center 1900 University
Cherry Street 1612 Lavaca
Clay Pit 1601 Guadalupe
A few blocks South of the river
Because the river designates the southern border of downtown and any restaurants beyond that are a bit of a walk, I decided not to “go there” for this guide
A few blocks East of 35
Cenote 1010 E. Cesar Chavez
Buenos Aires Cafe 1201 E. 6th
East Side Show Room 1100 E. 6th
Franklin Barbecue 900 E. 11th
Papi Tino’s 1306 E. 6th
A few blocks West of Lamar
Beets Living Foods Cafe 1611 W. 5th
Cipollina 1213 W. Lynn
Clark’s Oyster Bar 1200 W. 6th
Galaxy Cafe 1000 W. Lynn
