25 Recommended Downtown Austin Restaurants

1 March 2013 104,015 views 12 Comments

Sometimes, when people visit Austin for the weekend, or for events like SXSW, they decide not to rent a car if they are staying downtown. Downtown Austin used to be sort of a ghost town as far as great restaurants went, with a few sprinkled here and there, but not enough to sustain even a weekend visitor very easily. Luckily, Austin is growing like mad, and new restaurants are opening every week.

For the Austin City Guide, I’ve pulled together a list of my top 25 downtown restaurants, with “downtown” in this case being bordered by 15th to the North, Lady Bird Lake to the South, I-35 to the East, and Lamar to the West.

Without further ado, here are my top 25 downtown Austin restaurant recs:

24 Diner 600 Lamar

Banger’s 79 Rainey

The Bonneville 202 W. Cesar Chavez

Chez Nous 510 Neches

La Condesa 400 W. 2nd

Second Bar + Kitchen 200 Congress

Driskill Grill 604 Brazos

Easy Tiger 709 E. 6th

Eddie V’s 301 E. 5th

Frank 407 Colorado

Koriente 621 E. 7th

Lambert’s 401 W. 2nd

La Traviata 314 Congress

Manuel’s 310 Congress

Mulberry 360 Nueces

El Naranjo 85 Rainey

Parkside 301 E. 6th

Peche 208 W. 4th

Pelons 802 Red River

Roaring Fork 701 Congress

Russian House 307 E. 5th

TRIO at The Four Seasons 98 San Jacinto

Whole Foods Seafood Bar 525 Lamar

Wink 1014 Lamar

Restaurant recommendations just beyond the downtown self-defined border:

A few blocks North of 15th

The Carillon at the AT&T Center 1900 University

Cherry Street 1612 Lavaca

Clay Pit 1601 Guadalupe

A few blocks South of the river

Because the river designates the southern border of downtown and any restaurants beyond that are a bit of a walk, I decided not to “go there” for this guide

A few blocks East of 35

Cenote 1010 E. Cesar Chavez

Buenos Aires Cafe 1201 E. 6th

East Side Show Room 1100 E. 6th

Franklin Barbecue 900 E. 11th

Papi Tino’s 1306 E. 6th

A few blocks West of Lamar

Beets Living Foods Cafe 1611 W. 5th

Cipollina 1213 W. Lynn

Clark’s Oyster Bar 1200 W. 6th

Galaxy Cafe 1000 W. Lynn

Winflo Osteria 1315 W. 6th

Z’Tejas 1110 W. 6th

Great list! Wink is my all-time favorite, and I have a serious itch to try Swift's Attic, which I hear wonderful things about.

With the closing of Las Manitas, there is now a big hole waiting to be filled downtown. Literally.

Marcos – I couldn't agree with you more. It pains me that Las Manitas closed and didn't open again elsewhere. Their tortillas were to. die. for.

Awesome list, Jodi! I love how you lumped restaurants into areas around D/T too.
