A Tasty Guide to Austin Chronicle’s Best of Austin 2011

5 July 2011 4,990 views 34 Comments

This year’s Austin Chronicle‘s “Best of Austin 2011″ poll was published in last week’s issue of the weekly and if you plan to vote, entries are due in less than two weeks — on Monday, July 18.

Rules include one vote per person, no ballot stuffing, and only one ballot per envelope. Ha! I love that they give folks an option to MAIL in their vote. How cute and old-fashioned is Ye Olde Chronicle! Anyway, I’m sure if they ever stopped offering the option of mail-in ballots they would get dozens, DOZENS of complaints…but I do have to wonder how many write-in, mail-in ballots they get and how hard the handwriting is to decipher.

When BOA ballots are published, I like to pick up a hard copy of the Chronicle to jot down notes on my favorite spots, and carry it around for a few days in case I change my mind or think of answers for any categories I might have skipped. Then, once I feel pretty comfortable with my selections, I go online to vote. And while I’m sharing with you my current list of vote suggestions, these will change over time, and I’m hoping that some of you guys will point out businesses that are more deserving than the ones I’ve chosen. In many cases, it was a tough call. There are a lot of wonderful people, places, and things in this town.

Also, thank you to those of you who voted for me last year. As you’ll see below, I’m not recommending that you vote for me this time around….the way I see it, I have limited opportunities to ask you guys for favors, and as a direct result of your votes, Adam and I are headed to Europe soon! Thank you, thank you, thank you again for that.

Without further ado, here’s my initial thoughts on where my votes are going. You’ll notice I don’t have answers for all of the categories on the ballot:

  • Restaurant: Phil’s Ice House
  • DVD Selection: I Luv Video

  • Austin Holiday: Blanco and/or Wimberley
  • Day Trip – Dry: Enchanted Rock
  • Day Trip – Wet: Krause Springs
  • Place to Camp: Lost Maples

Shopping

  • Jewelry/Accessories: Renegade Craft Fair
  • Shoe Selection: Nordstrom Rack
  • Pet Store: Lofty Dog
  • Convenience Store: Whip-In
  • Local Bookstore: Book People
  • Record/CD Store: Waterloo Records

Wild Card (Tell us who or what you’d give an award to)

  • Best Food Trailer: East Side King (for their unique and delicious menus at all three locations)
  • Best Liquid Nourishment: Juicebox (for soup in the winter and fresh-squeezed juice in the summer)
  • Best Reason Not to Become a Vegetarian: The Noble Pig

I’d love to know what you think. Where did I get it wrong? Where did I get it right? What categories did I skip that you feel strongly about?

And remember, make your voice be heard and vote online by Monday, July 18!

I love you, Jodi.  :)  Thank you for the Best Local Blog shout-out/vote!

Also, I am so inspired by you and your man's trip to Europe!  GIRL!  I'm gonna manifest like you.  Where are y'all headed?  A multi-country tour, or hunkering down in one impossibly pretty place?

  • Megan

    Hey, thanks Jodi!

I love that you did this – I feel like I miss a lot in Austin and peeking at what other people are voting for helps me find out where to check out next.

I would suggest Jester King for local beer since technically Real Ale isn't in Austin.

  • jodibart

We won that Whole Foods Foodie Fantasy contest so Whole Foods and Intrepid Travel are sending me and Adam to Berlin, Amsterdam, Bruges, & Paris! We are extending the trip and spending a week in Provence after that!

  • jodibart

Hi Megan – It's always fun to read lists, and write them too! Good luck to you in the Best Food Blog category! You rock!

  • jodibart

    Ruff! Ruff! Wag! Wag!

  • jodibart

You know Austinist has a very special place in my heart!

  • jodibart

Good point, Matthew. I haven't tried Jester King yet but look forward to checking it out one day. Also, since Tom (comment above yours) is an investor in Jester King, I'm sure he would be thrilled for the support!

Connie's will be absolutely thrilled to hear you put the Beer Garden in your list!

  • jodibart

The people who work at Connie's are a huge part of the reason it's so special!

  • jessie

wow – next year arts & entertainment will be totally disappeared. good job, auschron. the only thing separating us from dallas is barton springs. we're sooo close. CULTURE SUCKS – LET'S GO SHOPPING!!!

  • LuckyMama

I thought I was one of the only to find Connie's Beer Garden on Chicon and MLK… it is a hidden jewel! I hope it stays as special when it is over run by all the new Chronicle fans!

  • jodibart

Hey Jessie: There are 23 categories for Arts & Entertainment in the poll. Check it out: http://www.austinchronicle.com… I only included my suggestions above for categories where I actually had an opinion, and sadly, I don't know much about the local arts scene and tend to go to bed early :-)
