Tasty Tuesdays: New Food Has Come to Light

4 January 2011 8,350 views 29 Comments

Damn, Austin! Just as I get on a roll with my healthy eating and exercise, you go and open up new mouthwatering restaurants! I hate you almost as much as I love you! I will prevail though — I will show you, and show myself, that I can enjoy deliciously rich dishes once in a while, stay on track the rest of the time, and still lose weight [shakes fist]!

So here’s my plan: eat as healthy as possible 90% of the time and the other 10%, check out these new spots that have all opened within the past two weeks.

“A rustic American tavern serving traditional American cuisine with British influences and carefully prepared cocktails.” – Haddingtons

“From the wood grill of Odd Duck Farm to Trailer, Bryce Gilmore’s new restaurant features shared plates and libations in this intimate communal dining space in South Austin.” – Barley Swine

Adam and I did pop into Barley Swine one evening shortly after they opened and enjoyed a couple of the microbrews on tap along with their stuffed pasta and barley, foie gras, and duck sausage plates. Everything was delicious and while both the beers and plates were not large by American portion standards, we thought they were perfect and left satisfied.

For another take on the restaurant, check out my friend Emily’s blog, Cooking Inside the Lines.

Another spot I have had a chance to visit and look forward to enjoying time and again is Second Bar + Kitchen (click here for my post). I look forward to tasting more dishes at Second as well as visiting it’s more upscale brother restaurant, Congress. For a wonderful take on her first experience at Congress, check out Michelle Cheng’s post on Foodie is the New Forty.

“Congress Austin features three new distinct destinations on the ground floor of The Austonian. Featuring the culinary talents of Executive Chef David Bull; Congress, Second Bar + Kitchen, and Bar Congress are now open.” – Congress Austin Facebook page.

“Trace welcomes the locavore home with our sleek, sophisticated eatery showcasing the finest flavors of Central Texas sourced directly from the region’s surrounding farms.” - TRACE at the W Hotel

W-Austin-Hotel

“Inspired by the legendary pizzerias of Naples, Chef-Owner Shawn Cirkiel announces his newest restaurant, the backspace, serving authentic Neapolitan pizza and artisanal antipasti.” – the backspacebackspace

Have you visited any of these spots yet? What did you think? What other restaurants — new or old — are you excited to visit (or revisit)?  Tops on my list to go back to are Foreign and Domestic, Fabi and Rosi, and 24 Diner. Also, I can’t wait to try Noble Pig, that opened this fall. In moderation with lots of  salads and roasted vegetables in between of course.

Thanks Jodi! Can we go enjoy all of these together? This is my list too darnit….

  • Melanie

Having two kids makes checking out new restaurants extremely difficult (we just sort of automatically assume that none of these new places is kid-friendly, and a nice dinner out + babysitting = crazy money), but my hope is to check out places that are so not new it's embarrassing, like Uchiko, Perla, Parkside, Bess, La Condesa, and Foreign & Domestic, as well as truly new places like Backspace and Haddington's.

Holy crap Austin! That's a load of fancy schmancy opening up. Not going to help the whole heavier wallet, lighter waist New Year's Resolution.

Love this list! You make me feel back in the loop with Austin restaurants. Thank goodness I have such a good friend in the know. Here's one for you…Zed's up on Parmer. (Full disclosure: I'm working with their PR folks, but it looks amazing, I'm going Friday.) http://www.zeds.bz

Can you please tell Emily that I am planning to go to at least ONE of these places with you in the new year? She can't have 'em all! Seriously – great post. And I can't wait to try all of these but especially pumped about Barley Swine. And there's a new drink/burger place coming to North Loop (not a far drive from our 'hood) called Drink Well. Looking forward to checking it out and optimistic it'll be as cool as its neighbors, the Tigress and F&D.

Melanie, please get thee to Perla's and please consider the soft shell crab BLT. It's not crazy expensive at $15. When the weather warms up, we really need to meet there for lunch!

Yes we definitely need to plan a night out to REALLY catch up!

  • jodibart

Of your list, I think you can remove Bess and maybe even Perla (although clearly Laura would disagree). Uchiko is a MUST as is Foreign and Domestic. La Condesa is nice and they are now open for lunch if that helps with the kid duties!

  • jodibart

Right?! Welcome back to Austin, Laura!

  • jodibart

I'm hearing good things and look forward to your recommendations! Also, I appreciate the full disclosure sweet McKinzey.

  • jodibart

Of COURSE, Laura! Glad you appreciate the post too. I don't normally do roundups unless it is tasty Tuesdays — oops I guess this could have qualified as a Tasty Tuesdays post — going to rename it now!

Thanks for telling me about Drink Well: http://www.drinkwellaustin.com/. The website looks really nice and I love how cool the North Loop is becoming! We can just ride our bikes there to offset the calories we will be taking in!

  • laura

I don't absolutely love Perla's. I think their oysters are totally overpriced. But it is SO hard to find a good seafood place in this town! Mostly, I love their deck and that $15 BLT. It's worth one visit in warm weather for that sandwich!

  • jodibart

Two questions: 1. How many points is that? 2. Can we split it? xo!

Seriously, I think I am going to have to give up and buy new pants in 2011. Will you join me in toasting my new pants, my friend?

Also: thanks so much for the shout out! <3 you.

    Hi,
Just tried Olivia's Saturday for the first time and I really found myself falling in love it with it. Not only is their menu updated daily, but the quality of their food was great. I particularly enjoyed their glazed crispy sweetbreads and their tri tip Kobe beef was cooked just right.
