PhoNatic: First Impression

Last week, I had another surprising and delicious meal in a strip mall. Ilyse and I met Jessica at PhoNatic in the Northcross Shopping Center on West Anderson.
Jessica had seen the new spot while driving by, and wanted to try it since her current favorite spot for Vietnamese, Hai Ky, doesn’t have a location that’s on the way home from work.

I was impressed with the self-serve bar that offered all of the traditional Vietnamese fixins.

And everything we ordered was inexpensive, huge, delicious, and made with what tasted like high quality …

We Ate, We Ate, We Biked. We Ate More.

The Tasty Touring South Austin Food Trailer Tour was over a week ago and Adam’s dad Lenny has been clamoring (or so I’m told) for a recap on the blog.
This is for you, Lenny.
Like the East Austin Taco Tour the month before, the weather played a large role. Instead of torrential rains, it was hot, Africa hot, that morning. Sunflower: You Haunt My Dreams

My dear friend Sara has been living in Sao Paolo, Brasil since this summer. She’s there for a total of two years working as a fifth grade teacher in an international school. She hasn’t yet found good Vietnamese food there so it just made sense that we would eat dinner at one of her favorite spots in Austin last night.
The first time I experienced Sunflower was with Sara and she made it so special. We were with a group of people and Sara expertly ordered for the table. I don’t …

Another Great Vietnamese Option

Normally when I’m in search of passable Vietnamese in Austin I think of three options: Hai Ky, Sunflower, and lulu b’s. Now I’ll add another to the mix — Le Soleil, located up north on Lamar near Rundberg Lane. Rumor has it that Le Soleil was opened by the ex-husband of the owner of Sunflower, after their divorce.

Sara B. introduced me to Sunflower and after tasting their prawns with garlicky noodles, I was hooked. Sara ordered our group a delicious array of her favorite foods there (I can’t remember the …

Capital with an "A"

My dad and I are inordinately interested in spelling. I was mentioning that I always have to look up the spelling of capitol vs. capital. I don’t think I’ll ever have to look that up again because we came up with the perfect device — The capital city is obviously chosen before the building so it’s spelled with an “A.” The capitol is generally round like an “O” (at least the ones in Austin and D.C. are). Can anyone can help me remember the difference between “affect” and “effect?”

It’s interesting …
