For my Food Lover’s Book Club discussion of Anthony Bourdain’s Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook, I decided to make “Bloody Valentine Plum Tarts.” I found a recipe for “Warm Plum Bleeding Heart Pies,” online and decided to add dripping blood shapes and red sprinkles to the crust to create a more realistic bloody valentine look.
These tarts would be perfect for a Halloween dessert or dinner with an ex-husband or wife.

I don’t think of myself as a food reviewer and I’m definitely not a book reviewer. When I visit a restaurant or read a book, I just know what I like. Sure, I guess I could break down (with the help of friends) the elements that worked for me and those that didn’t. The Winston Churchill High School class of 1996 is having a good week in the world of food media — Dhani Jones was on Man v. Food, David Freedenberg will be on No Reservations, and I was on the KGSR “Late Show” for my weekly Tasty Touring segment.
While a local radio gig may not be as big a deal as being a regular guest with Anthony Bourdain, or having your own show like Dhani Tackles the Globe, my mom still thinks it’s cool.
