On Equality and Absinthe

Today, I read an amazing article in the New York Times starring Brandon and his boyfriend, Benn. The article details how Brandon and Benn decided to move to London together (Benn is British) after Benn was unable to renew his work visa. The article poignantly shows — through interviews with Brandon and Benn, a photo slideshow, and audio, the painful experience of leaving your country, line of work, family, and closest friends in order to stay with the person they love.
I was reminded how lucky I am to know my friend …

David Alan of Annie’s and The Tipsy Texan Mixes Drinks on KGSR

The Winston Churchill High School class of 1996 is having a good week in the world of food media — Dhani Jones was on Man v. Food, David Freedenberg will be on No Reservations, and I was on the KGSR “Late Show” for my weekly Tasty Touring segment.

They told us to meet at Josh’s apartment at 5 pm for dinner at a place that was as famous for the long waits as they were for their pizza pies. It’s in Carroll Gardens and is called Lucali.
Lucali is BYOB so we picked up a large bottle of red wine at a nearby bodega. Inside, there were only about …

New York Style Bagels Rock Austin

Yesterday morning I talked Austin food with Andy and Bryan on KGSR’s Late Show. Those guys are so fun to chat with and it was great to go back for my second radio interview. A couple weeks ago, I brought miracle berries so they could experience a food trip. Next Friday, I’ll be on again at 8:30 a.m. CT, talking about all of these new burger joints around town.
In between segments, they told me about professional drummer Joe Humel, and the New York-style bagels he sells through his company, Rockstar …
