Buildings and Food @ Arthouse

Back in November, I posted about “Austin Arty Food Events” and included the reopening of Arthouse and Jason Middlebrook’s “More Art About Buildings and Food” exhibition in the list.
If you haven’t had a chance to stop by Arthouse, the exhibition space at 7th and Congress, you can still check out the art about buildings and food until Jan. 16.
For me, the coolest part of this exhibit is that I’m part of it! One of my family recipes is painted directly onto this wall. Also, once it’s over, they will just …

Nagymama’s Matzo Ball Soup

Earlier this year I posted, “Love, 1930s style,” a letter written by my mom’s father, Papa, upon meeting his future wife. Last November, I posted my dad’s mom, Nagymama’s, recipe for chicken paprikash.
Last week Nagymama passed away. I was lucky to have her in my life for such a long time and have so many loving memories of my grandparents.

Chicken Paprikash

My Nagymama is a great cook. She made the BEST Chicken Paprikash with mushroom rice when I was growing up. She doesn’t cook now so my mom makes the recipe occasionally.
I have to give credit to my mother — Nagymama is dad’s mother and my mom takes care of her like they are related by blood. It’s really amazing and I don’t know anyone else who would be so patient and loving to someone else’s mother (especially one who can be as stubborn as Nagymama).
Here is the recipe for …

Eastern European Treats at the Kielbasa Factory in Rockville

My dad picked me up at the airport the other day and asked if we could run a quick errand. I’ve known the man for 3o years but he never ceases to surprise. Where were we headed?

To The Kielbasa Factory (actual logo at left), on the second floor of a mini-mall on Rockville Pike. Just in case you were wondering, it’s the only grocery store that caters specifically to the Polish-American community in the D.C. area. They carry everything you might need to feed your cravings for sausage, chocolate, sweets, …
