Wine and Sweet Victory Chicken

After winning a bet with the manager of the Belvedere Hotel in Santorini, Greece this summer, my reward was a bottle of wonderful local white wine — Sigalas. Thank you, Nicos!

I’ve been saving the bottle for a special occasion and couldn’t think of a better time than while watching history being made. After eight long and scary years, I was filled with pride and hope watching my fellow Americans choose Barack Obama as our next leader.

My wonderful cousin Jami is in town this weekend and we have been having such a fantastic time together! Activities have included a visit to Salt Lick for BBQ, two-stepping at the Broken Spoke, yoga, dress and bike shopping, a three hour Thriller dance workshop, and more.

Last night, we decided to meet Ilyse and her friend Claire at the 76th annual Mediterranean Festival at St. Elias Orthodox Church. Saint Elias Church has been part of downtown Austin since 1932, when the Middle Eastern community built it by hand.

July in Greece

As with most vacations, the majority of our time in Greece was spent planning our next meal or complaining about how full we felt. We regularly enjoyed locally produced greek salad, olive oil, feta cheese, tzatziki, freshly caught seafood, yogurt, honey, and wine.
Each of our three hotels in Athens, Santorini, and Sifnos, provided us with a breakfast more elaborate than the last. The highlight was the spread provided at Niriedes hotel in Sifnos. It included Greek coffee (it’s the same as Turkish coffee – thick and sludgy), local cookies and …
