Tasty Tuesdays: Austin’s Best Cupcake

I was honored to be a judge a couple weeks ago in Jennie Chen’s Cupcake Smackdown at One 2 One bar in downtown Austin and have been meaning to write about the event since then. Below is a cute photo taken by a Statesman A-List photographer of Devrah Otten, winner of the tasting competition portion of That Takes The Cake in 2008 and 2009, me, Jennie, and Natanya Anderson, Fete and Feast blogger and Next Food Network Star hopeful.
I’m not going to get into the results here but some …

Mid-Summer Tasty Touring Linkdown: The Tasty Bits

I learned through Natanya’s Fete and Feast blog that (512) Brewing Company is having a party to celebrate their 1st anniversary this Saturday from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. If you’re legal to drink, you can tour the brewery, listen to live music, and maybe even leave with a free gift. More info here.

Toot Sweets for Your Sweet

The other day my colleague sent an e-mail around the office announcing that her boyfriend had surprised her with a large box of cupcakes. They were from Toot Sweet Cupcakes, one of the few local cupcake purveyors that I had not yet tried.
Toot Sweet’s cupcakes are gorgeous, topped with adorable tiny hearts, mini-Reese’s Pieces, and came in a large brown box with see-through cover and a thick ribbon wrapped around it.
The cakes themselves are small and I found them extremely dry even though they are filled with custard. I’m not …

The Best Sushi in Austin is on Parmer Lane

I am a staunch central and south Austinite — someone who refers to anything north of 183 as “South Dallas.” However, I will make exceptions for special occasions and last night Jessica wanted to go to a sushi restaurant in North Austin to celebrate her birthday. I was skeptical to say the least — I had not heard of Tomo before and it was located in an uber-suburban mini-mall.

From the moment we walked in the door, I had a good feeling. It reminded me of a neighborhood sushi bar in …
