I’m a bit obsessed with Texas barbecue, or BBQ, depending on your personal preference, and have written about it quite a bit. Over the almost six years that I’ve lived in Austin, I’ve visited many of the best BBQ pits in the state ranging from Salt Lick to Smitty’s to the back entrance of the Continental Club on South Congress.

Can a Book Taste Like Texas BBQ?

In the case of Wyatt McSpadden‘s Texas BBQ, the answer is yes. This gorgeous coffee table book showcases work by one of the best photographers in the state documenting the steaming, dripping, juicy foodways of Central Texas.
The book itself is a piece of history and is filled with photos from McSpadden’s twenty years documenting barbecue around Austin. For me, it was like a walk down memory lane as I’ve enjoyed many of the same spots for authentic barbecue, prepared by pit masters that have been smoking meat for decades.

BBQ in Lockhart

Since moving to Austin from New York City in 2003, one of my favorite ways to spend a Saturday is to take short road trips with friends and check out the amazing food experiences that Texas has to offer. The Salt Lick, in Driftwood — just twenty minutes from Austin – is the gold standard of BBQ for me.

Nothing beats the flavor-packed sausage, freshly baked white bread, and delicious, not too mayonnaisey sides. A couple years ago, when I first moved to Austin, I visited Cooper’s BBQ in Llano.
