Belgium Bites

Sending a shout out to everyone celebrating a birthday today on 11-11-11! This year, I spent my birthday in Bruges (or Brugge), Belgium. Adam and I bought a small package of candles at HEMA, one of those stores where you end up buying things you never knew you needed.
We ate our way through Bruges, and almost everywhere we stopped, Adam stuck a candle in whatever we were sampling and lit it. I got to make lots of wishes that day! Here we are at da Vinci Gelateria.
Next stop was for …

Where to Eat in Santa Fe

On this trip to Santa Fe, I didn’t have much of an appetite and felt nauseous most of the time due to altitude sickness, so I actually didn’t eat very much. However, some dishes and restaurant experiences did stand out.

Last Sunday, I spent the day with my mom and cousin Jami in Berkeley preparing for the next night’s dinner. Obviously, my contribution was the Matzoh Crack. When I found a six pack of HE’BREW, The Chosen Beer, at a nearby …

Smarties, My Ancestral Candy

Dear Emily G.,
I can’t tell you how much fun it was to get your fanciful care package from your trip to Canada. I knew what it contained (since I asked you to send it) but the way you decorated the envelop was so endearing:

I can’t remember the last time (if ever) I’ve taken a picture of a mailer but this one was so cute.

Inside the lovingly prepared exterior was a consumer product near and dear to my heart — Smarties. Not the chalky kind wrapped in clear plastic that we …
