You’re Bacon Me Crazy!

A couple weeks ago, I overheard a new friend, Brian, talking about bacon to fellow food blogger Logan of Boots in the Oven. My ears immediately perked up and I asked what this bacon talk was all about. Turns out, Brian’s brother Greg Bass cures and smokes pork belly at home and gives portions of bacon to friends and friends of friends. The Austin Chronicle referred to Greg as an “extreme bacon hobbyist” in an April story about local restaurants curing their own bacon.
Greg and Logan met at a hog-butchering …

South Austin Pizza Stand Brings the Amore

I don’t remember the first time I saw Giovanni Pizza Stand on South Lamar at Barton Skyway, and was surprised to learn when I finally visited this past weekend that it has been there for two years. Giovanni is easy to miss – it’s a small white trailer with unassuming signage set in the back of an empty parking lot.

Thankfully, I’m not the only one that puts their faith in the mostly sunny days of Austin. When Adam and I unloaded our bikes, pumped up the tires, and arrived at Porfirio’s Tacos in East Austin this morning at 11, there were at least 30 people already there — eating, hanging out, and ready to tour!
Adam adds green salsa to …

Strawberry Lemon Cocktail on a Sunday Afternoon

Last week a bunch of food bloggers and reporters were invited to Thai-Fresh, a fast casual Thai restaurant on W. Mary Street in South Austin. The chef/owner, Jam, and David of Tipsy Texan wanted us to check out their new class — Summer Cocktails and Thai Appetizers. They are offering the class this Thursday, May 14 if you want to check it out yourself.
I loved the Thai food but it was the inventive drinks and the history behind American cocktails that really blew me away. The Tipsy Texan makes his …
