Babies are Delicious

Last night I had the pleasure of babysitting for seven-month-old Mia Ansel, daughter of David and Meredith. I headed over there at about 6:30 p.m. (after picking up the keys to my new apartment — I’m moving today!) to get instructions on how to care for a baby.
I did have an idea of how to change a diaper but I wanted to make sure to learn their routine so that Mia would feel comfortable. After the orientation, they sweetly asked if I had eaten dinner (I hadn’t).
For those who don’t …

A Locavore Weekend

I’m trying to eat healthier lately so you might see more fruits and veggies appear in the blog. This weekend, I ate lots of great local food. It started off with dinner at Eastside Cafe with Katie — we split Crabmeat-Stuffed Shrimp — 4 jumbo shrimp stuffed with crab meat, bell peppers, and garlic and served over fresh spinach. We had mashed sweet potatoes and veggie soup on the side.

On Saturday, I headed down to the Sunset Valley Farmer’s Market to pick up some fresh local veggies. It seemed …

Pita Pizzas are Cute

This weekend I invited Katie and Rick over for a quick dinner before heading out to Hole in the Wall to see Eric rock out on the drums and make hilarious faces during a performance by his band, General Boy.
I made another one of the quick recipes adapted from the Whole Foods bulletin — Tomato Pizza. I brushed pita rounds with olive oil and crushed garlic and put in the oven for 5 minutes at 400 degrees. I topped the pita with sliced tomatoes, mixed greens, pesto, goat cheese, Parmesan, …

Wine with Good Friends

Last night, Rachel, Jessica, Ilyse, Melissa (pictured) and I spent the evening at a new wine bar called Uncorked to celebrate Rachel, who is officially moving to the Washington, D.C. area after about five months of world travel. It was surreal actually saying goodbye to her because aside from her being my best friend, she has been my family here in Austin — introducing me to her circle of friends when I moved here 5 years ago, including me in potluck Shabbat dinners, Chanukah parties, and countless outings and events. …

Whole Foods Food Blogger Recipe Challenge

As a new food blogger, I can’t seem to contain my excitement to tell everyone about this new project. I’m having so much fun! The other night I was at a happy hour and was talking to some folks about social networking, twitter, blogging, etc. when I learned that Whole Foods is having a contest for food bloggers to create a recipe for under $4.

Last night, my friend and colleague Lindsay and I met Statesman food reporter Addie Broyles and some other fun people at an “Apps with Addie” event …

I finally found a Sugar Mama!

I think I’m in love! I dropped by Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop today to pick up a 4-pack of their cupcakes — I’d read rave reviews on Yelp and the place has only been open for a week so I felt I owed it to my readers to check the place out
I picked up a Peanut Butter Cup(cake), Hummingbird, Black and Tan, and Hula to go.
Translation: PB & Chocolate, Pineapple/Banana/Pecan/Cream Cheese Frosting, Guinness Stout cupcake with Irish Cream Cheese Frosting, Coconut cupcake with cream frosting and toasted coconut.
I couldn’t …

Meals for One: Weekly Meal Planning

While not immediately obvious when reading foodtouring, I’m actually a big fan of home food preparation. For the first half of this year, I was a “Cook Once, Eat All Week” gal and would make 3-4 recipes at home on a Sunday, portion them out, and enjoy them for lunches or dinners. Since I’ve moved four times this summer and most of my kitchen tools are in storage, I’ve been cooking much less often.
This weekend, while grabbing a quick lunch at Whole Foods, I picked up “the whole deal,” a …
