The Best Gelato in Austin

…is at Teo on 38th Street, no contest. I was first introduced to Teo by Sara Ballon, who turned me on to their refreshing pineapple sorbetto. Since then, I’ve gone back to Teo as often as once a week (or more) to get my fix. Usually, I have a hard time resisting their organic peanut butter and nutella but you can’t really go wrong. Best part, gelato is slightly better for you than ice cream so there’s less guilt!

I was surprised to see that they haven’t won best gelato …

My wonderful cousin Jami is in town this weekend and we have been having such a fantastic time together! Activities have included a visit to Salt Lick for BBQ, two-stepping at the Broken Spoke, yoga, dress and bike shopping, a three hour Thriller dance workshop, and more.

Last night, we decided to meet Ilyse and her friend Claire at the 76th annual Mediterranean Festival at St. Elias Orthodox Church. Saint Elias Church has been part of downtown Austin since 1932, when the Middle Eastern community built it by hand.
We were starving …

Not Mom’s Apple Pie

Marcia and Rich W. gave me a gift certificate to Williams-Sonoma for my birthday. Marcia, like her daughter Rachel, is a wonderful cook and hostess. I chose a classic deep-dish ceramic pie dish by the renowned French pottery company, Emile Henry.
Today is Yom Kippur, a Jewish High Holy Day and I spent much of the day creating this gorgeous pie — closely adapted from a recipe card I picked up at the store. Pie-making runs in my family but I have never before made a pie with a cheese crust! …

HAAM Benefit Day Kicks Off at Whole Foods

Lucy and I woke up at 5:45 this morning to walk down to Whole Foods to see The Dime Store Poets, one of my favorite Austin bands perform. I think I might have been the only fan crazy enough to get up that early but Lucy and I were in the mood for adventure.
I grabbed a coffee (Whole Foods is donating 5% of their proceeds today to the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians) and went outside to hang out. I asked the band if they could play one of my …

The Lighter Side of Jeffrey’s

Rob and I both recently moved to Clarksville and agreed that we are eager to get to know the ‘hood. When he invited me to join him at Jeffrey’s of Austin for their happy hour I was so excited. First I walked three blocks to his house to pick him up and meet dear little Sally.
She polished off her dinner and we headed over to West Lynn. The bar was completely full when we arrived so they told us we could sit at a table. So exciting. They don’t even …

Wishing You a Sweet New Year

L’Shana Tova to all of my fellow tribe members and a sweet New Year to All! Last night I enjoyed Rosh Hashanah dinner at Dave and Meredith’s. Their home is filled with such warmth and love and last night was especially cozy. They have so many people in their lives that they decided not to host a big Rosh Hashanah dinner like they often do. I had invited myself over as did Brian H. and Brian S. so it was a small group of us who rang in the …

ACL Food Rocks

Thanks to my client, AT&T I was lucky enough to attend the Austin City Limits Music Festival for the second year in a row. I saw some great bands including Fleet Foxes, Jose Gonzalez, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Eli “Paperboy” Reed, Spiritualized, John Fogerty, and Robert Plant/Alison Krauss. My favorite show by far was Plant and Krauss who gave a virtuosic, entrancing, sexy performance that included a wonderful band along with special guest T-Bone Burnett.

The food vendors at ACL include low-end versions of the best Austin has to offer …
