Lenny H: Questions on Your Life in Food

Adam’s dad Lenny is a great cook. It blew my mind when I first visited Paula and Lenny in Houston because growing up, the kitchen was mom’s domain and at the Holzband’s, it’s most definitely “Lenny’s Kitchen.” As you may have read in Adam’s post, Lenny would prepare holiday meals for dozens, brunches for Adam and his friends, and quick chicken roasts for neighbors going through a rough patch.
Next time I’m sick, I’ll be asking Adam to cook me up some Gogol Mogol after reading about Lenny’s Bubbes’ recipe below. …

Tasty Tuesdays: Best Austin Food Trailers at 6 p.m.

It’s dinnertime in Austin — what trailer would you visit? Remember to always check the trailer’s website or Yelp to make sure it’s open before you go. Two of my favorites are located on or near Rainey Street just southeast of the Austin Convention Center. El Naranjo was opened by Iliana de la Vega and her husband and features delicious interior Mexican food. The menu changes regularly, but if you go, I recommend the Gringas al Pastor if they have it.
Another spot in the area I really enjoy is G’raj …

Adam H: Questions on Your Life in Food

Anyone who has spent time with Adam knows immediately that he is passionate about food and cooking. We love grocery shopping, cooking, and eating together and I’m so lucky to share this adventure in life and food with him. He is a wonderful storyteller and I hope this is one of many guest blog posts to come.

Adam H. – Born in 1975 (grandson of Sylvia and Bessie; son of Paula and Lenny; boyfriend of Jodi)
If you were given a dollar to …

Paula H: Questions on Your Life in Food

Since Sylvia’s “life in food” kind of left off with Paula’s birth, it seemed to make sense to move to Paula’s stories next. Like the sweet and selfless mother that she is, when I asked her for old photos, she sent LOTS of her son Adam, but few of herself.
Paula H. – Born in 1948 (Sylvia‘s daughter, Lenny‘s wife, Adam‘s mother)
If you were given a dollar to buy treats when you were a kid, what would you buy?
Don’t remember being given a dollar to buy treats, but if I did, …

Sylvia O: Questions on Your Life in Food

As you may know if you have been keeping tabs, I started a series called “Questions on Your Life in Food” last week with my family and am continuing this week with Adam’s family.
We recently spent a weekend in Tulsa, OK with his maternal grandmother, Sylvia (AKA Grandma), where I interviewed her about some of these questions. Others, she answered in an e-mail until she had to sign off to head out to her poker game with the ladies.
Sylvia O. – Born in 1922 (mother of Paula, grandmother of Adam)

Jeffrey B: Questions on Your Life in Food

This is the final segment of the very small Bart family edition of the “Your Life in Food” series. Since there are just four of us, I thought it would be interesting to include Adam’s family as well. The Holzband/Oberstein chapters will begin following this post so stay tuned!
Without further ado, last, but certainly not least, my brother, or as some know him, “The Shoe King of New York.”

Tasty Tuesdays: Best Austin Food Trailers at 2 p.m.

Since we’re moving up by three hours each week on this Tasty Tuesdays series on “Best Austin Food Trailers.” We now move to 2 p.m. — skipping over the most traditional hours for lunch.
However, think about what you might be doing at 2 p.m. — either on the weekend or during the week — and the kind of snack or meal you might enjoy at that time. I know that I often forget to eat lunch until 2 — or that’s the time I crave some sort of dessert after …
