Mike Sutter Unmasked

When I heard the news that Austin American-Statesman food critic Mike Sutter was taking a buyout and retiring from the paper, I felt a pang of sadness.
Everyone had their own opinion of his reviews, but to me, they were smart, funny, and always well-researched. I knew that if I read a review by Mike, that it would mean he had visited the restaurant at least three times, taken pains to ensure he wasn’t recognized, and did his best to give the restaurant staff the respect and care they deserved.
He understood …

Joe’s Place and Connie’s Beer Garden – An East Austin Gem

One of the categories of the Austin Chronicle‘s Best of Austin reader’s poll last month was Austin’s Best-Kept Secret. My vote? Connie’s Beer Garden on Friday and Saturday nights.
I happened to drive by Joe’s Place and Connie’s Beer Garden one day, and noticed their sign boasting about their great reviews on Yelp and Urban Spoon. By the way, the name is kind of confusing, but I believe the business is called Joe’s Place, and Connie’s Beer Garden is how the husband-and-wife owners refer to the outdoor space.

There are a lot …

Monument Cafe and Market in Georgetown

Georgetown, Texas seems so far away in my mind — and it’s only a 1/2 hour drive from our house. And because a total of an hour in the car seems like such a schlep now that I don’t live in the gridlocked east coast, it took me more than a year to visit the Monument Cafe since I’d added it to my list of restaurants to check out.
This spring, the PR firm that represents Monument Cafe invited me to come meet the owner and take a tour, so Adam …

Cool Ice Cream, Hot People at the Ice Cream Social!

I don’t know about you, but all I want during this 100 degree summer is ice cream, ice cream, and more ice cream so last week’s ice cream social came at a perfect time for me. As readers of the blog know, I wanted to throw an ice cream party to thank folks for voting for me to win Whole Foods Foodie Fantasy trip to Europe, and because of a generous donation from Graeter’s of 15 gallons of ice cream — enough to feed 500 people (!), I was able …

Aug. 21: Pie Love Fundraiser for SafePlace

There are some really fun food events coming up this weekend and next weekend that I want to make sure you know about. They each feature delicious food, entertainment, giving back to the community, and maybe best of all, AIR CONDITIONING. Yes, it’s been over 100 degrees for way too long here in Austin. We are currently at over forty days of over 100 degree heat…it’s almost biblical what is going on down here! But thank goodness for that air conditioning.
Anyway, this weekend, I’m competing in the Slow Food Austin …

Ice Cream Social and Foodie Fantasy Buzz

This post is for my records (and for my parents to enjoy), folks. Please feel free to move along — I promise not to quiz you later.
Some lovely friends and local media recently covered the Foodie Fantasy win and ice cream social, and one of the ways I use this blog is to record that kind of stuff.
Thank you to Addie Broyles, who encouraged her readers to attend the ice cream social through her Relish Austin blog on Austin 360.com.
Graeter’s hits Austin stores with a bang, free ice cream social …

Thank You For Voting Ice Cream Social!

I’m so grateful to my Austin community for voting to help me win a foodie fantasy trip to Europe from Whole Foods. Adam and I are booked for the adventure of a lifetime in September!
As a small way to say thank you, since unfortunately I can’t fit everyone who voted in my suitcase, I’m hosting an ice cream social, and everyone is invited, while supplies last!
I figured what better way to celebrate and beat the heat than to get together for a cool, tasty treat at the Open Room — a magical …
