Best Italian in Austin

I’m very excited to be participating in the Austin Food Blogger Alliance’s 2012 City Guide, a compilation of posts with recommendations on food and drink in our fair city. My first contribution is this guide to the best Italian food in Austin. Now, when I moved to Austin in late 2003, the Italian offerings were pretty slim. Vespaio, which is still one of the best Italian restaurants in town, was open, but to my memory, there wasn’t much else in terms of really good Italian food.

Since then, the Italian food …

My 10-Day Juice Feast

I’m on Day 4 of not eating. Well, I’m taking in calories, but there’s nothing to chew on or prepare. I’m on day 4 of a 10-day juice fast (or feast if you’re a glass half full kind of person), compliments of Matt Shook and David Ansel of Juicebox Austin.
Inspired by Claudia Alarcon, who wrote about her experiences with 10-day juicing on her blog, and in the Austin Chronicle, I decided to try out a juice cleanse myself.
I’ve been wanting to refocus my energies on getting healthy, and have had …

Our shotgun wedding

Most of you know that Adam and I went to Europe last September on an amazing trip I won from Whole Foods Market after making this video; and that we got engaged in Paris. You also may know that we spent a lot of time last October and November looking at venues. We planned to get married in October 2012.
In the midst of all this excitement, Adam’s 100-year-old Bubbe, who was the last person to leave her 200-person birthday party last summer, started weakening. She was very frail over Thanksgiving, and …

Soup Peddler: Local Before Local Was Cool

I am kvelling (if you’re goyishe that means filled with pride in Yiddish) at the unveiling of the Soup Peddler’s new website.
And even though I’m not the Soup Peddler, nor do I play him on TV, David is a dear friend of ours, and Adam worked with him tirelessly to manage the creative and technical design of his new website. All those whimsical hand-drawn illustrations you see? That’s by Austin’s own  Gerren Lamson. Check out Gerren’s website for more of his delicious and inspiring work.
On Friday, The Soup Peddler is having …

Tasty Tuesdays: The Austin Scene is Blowin’ Up

There are lots of new, big, and fun things happening in the Austin food scene lately and since I haven’t had time to blog much in 2012, I thought I’d just throw down a list of some of the news that is making me wiggle around in my seat with excitement!
Upscale Eating

Bistrot Mirabelle: A romantic neighborhood bistro in Mesa Hills serving southern French-inspired dishes for lunch, dinner, and Sunday  brunch. I visited recently for an event and absolutely loved their mussels, along with a chocolate chocolate cookie, and am looking …

Austin Food Blogger Alliance: 2011 in Review

I wrote this post for the Austin Food Blogger Alliance (AFBA) website, in an effort to create a record of the organization that I’m very proud to have helped found. The timeline doesn’t include the many emails back and forth, hours long meetings, and ups and downs that the founding members and current board members have gone through to get AFBA going; but looking back on all we have accomplished in our very first year, I’m glad I stuck with this group of smart, funny, opinionated, and amazing people. I …
