Western Indian with a South Austin Twist

Whip In is the quintessential “Keep Austin Weird” establishment. Located on the access road to I-35 just south of Oltorf, I always figured it was just a place to make a beer run on the way to a house party. But Whip In is so much more than that! Family-owned since 1986, it sells beer, wine, and local products. In August, they began selling eat-in, homestyle recipes from the Gujarat region of western India — with South Austin flair. Meals are served from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m., seven days …

Breakfast Tacos and more at The Screaming Goat

Eating a taco from a restaurant that calls itself the Screaming Goat is a daunting proposition as anyone who has overdone it with hot peppers can attest. My thinking was that either the owners have a quirky sense of humor or that they are horrible sadists who were going to make me regret choosing to eat there for the rest of the weekend.

Péché Brings Absinthe to Austin

Péché (pron. Pesh-ay) is a new bar/restaurant that opened about a month ago on 4th Street in the location that used to be Málaga. The last time I went to Málaga I vowed never to return due to the Cake Fiasco of ’08. I believe the restaurant still exists but in a new location. I hope to never set foot there.

Laura, Betsy and I visited Péché for the first time last night, after a happy hour hosted by the Austin chapter of the Anti-Defamation league. When Laura ordered the Bacon …

Drink Y’all!

On Sunday I spent the day in the Texas Hill Country. We started the day at McReynolds Wines where we tasted Mac and Maureen’s delicious and unique wine selection. We then convinced them to hop in the car with us and have lunch at Opie’s BBQ in Spicewood. I had passed Opie’s many times on drives out to Fredericksburg but never stopped to check it out. Opie’s was made famous by the documentary, Barbecue: A Texas Love Story, where Kinky Friedman says that “Jesus Loved Barbecue.” Our waitress was wearing …
