Devouring the Statesman Dining Guide

Did you know that about seven times more restaurants opened than closed in the past year in Austin, Texas according to the Statesman?
This isn’t hard for me to believe in that I have a hard time keeping up with all of the new spots that are opening all around town — especially all of the food trailers!
After reading through the Austin360 Dining Guide, Mike Sutter’s recommendations for dishes and meals he enjoyed during his first year as Statesman food critic, I decided it was time to make my own list …

Statesman Restaurant Critic Mike Sutter on KGSR

This morning at 8:15 a.m. CT, Statesman food editor and restaurant critic Mike Sutter will join us on the KGSR morning show to chat about his first year on the job, some of the 25 best dishes in Austin, and how it’s possible that no picture of him appears on a Google image search.

Indian Food Expert and “Vegicurean” Chaya Rao on KGSR

We loved having Chaya Rao as our guest on the KGSR show today. She brought a traditional South Indian upscale breakfast including:
Idlys – Steamed while dumplings made out of rice and black lentil
Vadas – Deep fried black lentil batter seasoned with pepper, cumin, curry leaves, ginger & serrano chilies
Khati Rolls – Flat bread rolls stuffed with Paneer cheese & Red peppers (like an Indian breakfast taco!)
Dipping Sauces

Coconut chutney
Ginger pickle in a spicy tamarind sauce
Makhni sauce – Cashew nut, cream & tomato based sauce

Chai tea
Cardamom & Cinnamon rolls with toasted coconuts …

Andrea Day-Boykin of Flip Happy Crepes on KGSR

Andrea chatted with me, Andy, and Bryan today about Flip Happy Crepes, the converted airstream trailer she owns with business partner Nessa Huggins.
She brought some delicious crepes for us to taste include the vanilla cream with berries, lemon curd with blueberries, the Cuban, ham and cheese, and bananna nutella. If only every day began with a fresh nutella and banana crepe. Mmmmmm.
The news? Flip Happy is now open from Wednesdays to Sundays from at least 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. They are closed on Monday and Tuesday.
