Shuck Shack Brings Gulf Flavor to Austin

Betsy is one of the people whose opinion I trust most when it comes to fresh seafood and cajun-style cuisine. We have eaten together at Perla’s, Nubian Queen Lola’s, and now Shuck Shack. I heard about Shuck Shack first via Maggie’s Austin, another local food blog with awesome photography.

Below is Betsy’s review — I’ll follow up after to add my two cents (although I generally agree with her).
Shuck Shack’s website prominently proclaims “The Gulf Coast Comes to East Austin.” As a Gulf Coast native who is generally disappointed in …

Laura S. Reviews Food Blogger Event at Gumbo’s

I love spending time with guest blogger Laura S. and her main squeeze Mike, so was very pleased that they were invited to attend the food blogger’s happy hour last night at Gumbo’s.
The restaurant is beautiful and location on Colorado between 7th and 8th in the historic Brown Building. While I’ve never experienced a meal at Gumbo’s, I did recently blog about Vault 55, the super exclusive wine storage facility in the basement of the building.

The Scene – As soon as I entered Perla’s lush, oak-tree lined patio area, I felt …

Lucky to Have ‘Em

It’s been so long since I promised Jodi this post on Lucky J’s, you’d think I’d forgotten all about the experience. Au contraire.
I was never really sold on the idea of chicken and waffles as a viable combination until I caught a Throwdown episode last year. Bobby Flay went up against a woman from Harlem who’d been making chicken and waffles with a recipe dating back to the 1930s. I was drooling. I was entranced. I was ready to move to Harlem. Suddenly, it all made sense, at least in …

Love, 1930s style

My mom found an old photocopy of a letter her father wrote in early February, 1936 after meeting her mother. I never met my grandfather (Joe) as he died before I was born. This letter gave me a better picture of who he was as a person than any other picture or story has done.
Joe is writing to his sister, Freda, to tell her about the wonderful woman he has decided to marry after only knowing her for eight days. He was 29 years old. The first photo below features …
