A Smoothie for Allen

When one of our board members shared the news that Allen Stern, Austin Food Blogger Alliance (AFBA) member, early tech blogger, entrepreneur, and green smoothie enthusiast had passed away last week, many members shared stories of Allen’s kindness, welcoming personality, and excitement about his new healthy lifestyle.

I never met Allen Stern personally, but he was an active member of AFBA, and a very enthusiastic and giving one at that. Unfortunately, I never met Allen in person, all of my interactions with Allen were all in an online context — via the AFBA members Facebook group and through email.

Allen had lost well over 100 pounds in the past year and attributed much of his success to drinking green smoothies. He was a green smoothie evangelist and shared recipes and inspiration on his blog, lets talk fitness, and his social media channels.

Today is his funeral, and one of his friends suggested that those Allen touched drink a green smoothie in his honor, and post a picture and the ingredients on Twitter and/or Google+ with the hashtag #smoothieforallen. I can’t imagine a better way to honor him.

This morning, I read Allen’s blog for inspiration, and then made a mango, blueberry, acai, spinach smoothie (with some fresh-squeezed lemon and orange juice).

If you don’t have the time or ingredients to make a green smoothie at home, here are Allen’s guide to the best juices and smoothies in Austin, that he put together as part of the Austin City Guide.

From reading his blog, its clear that he was a true romantic, and the day after Valentine’s Day, he posted this great DIY apple heart idea:

Allen was regularly posting inspirational messages online, and the last message he shared on his Facebook page was from April 1:

When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.
— Alexander Graham Bell

What an amazing thought to leave us with. I hope as his family mourns his passing much too soon, that their shared memories will be a blessing and stay with them for the rest of their lives.
