Austin’s Meatiest Food News and Events

It’s rare that I do an events/newsy post, I usually post information about upcoming events I think are cool in my Facebook group, but there is so much cool stuff happening over the next few weeks that I felt it was time for a roundup.
Apologies in advance to any vegans or vegetarians in the group, for some reason, there’s lots of flesh-eating events coming up over the next few weeks.
Without further ado, here’s what’s on my radar for Austin food lovers:

A Smoothie for Allen

When one of our board members shared the news that Allen Stern, Austin Food Blogger Alliance (AFBA) member, early tech blogger, entrepreneur, and green smoothie enthusiast had passed away last week, many members shared stories of Allen’s kindness, welcoming personality, and excitement about his new healthy lifestyle.

I love the design and feel of their bags of coffee beans.

We picked up two pastries — a kouign amann and a¬†raspberry hazelnut scone — to enjoy with our coffees. Kouign Amann is a round cake with layers of caramelized sugar. The cake originated in western France, but …

Brunch at Portland’s Screen Door

Just a quick shout-out to Portland’s Screen Door, where we went for brunch on our final day in the city. The wait was long, but we enjoyed spending some extra time walking around the neighborhood for most of the wait time.

The unforgettable dish that we ordered was their famous fried chicken on a sweet potato waffle. Served with maple syrup, as any self-respecting waffle or pancake item should, we also enjoyed the hot sauce that was served on the side. As you can see, this is a huge dish, and …
