My 10-Day Juice Feast

24 February 2012 3,400 views 21 Comments

I’m on Day 4 of not eating. Well, I’m taking in calories, but there’s nothing to chew on or prepare. I’m on day 4 of a 10-day juice fast (or feast if you’re a glass half full kind of person), compliments of Matt Shook and David Ansel of Juicebox Austin.

Inspired by Claudia Alarcon, who wrote about her experiences with 10-day juicing on her blog, and in the Austin Chronicle, I decided to try out a juice cleanse myself.

Morning pick up at the Juicebox

Morning pick up at the Juicebox

I’ve been wanting to refocus my energies on getting healthy, and have had a hard time getting motivated, so the idea of cleaning out and resetting my body really appealed to me. Also, my friend David Ansel (the Soup Peddler) agreed to do the cleanse with me, and everyone knows that misery loves company. Besides, while David had never done a 10-day juice cleanse, he has done the Master Cleanse (or Lemonade Diet) in the past, so I knew he would have good tips for me.

Each morning at 8 a.m., I call the Juicebox and order my fresh-pressed juices for the day. To start, Matt recommended I order five large, 24-oz. drinks from the Juicebox menu. Later that afternoon, I was concerned about being hungry, so I decided to order a sixth. He suggested I start with two Love Cleanses, one Beet Generation, one Salad Bar, one Flying Lotus, and a rotating pick for my last juice. The focus is on vegetables, with fruits used to sweeten the juices, without making them too sugary.

How I’m Doing

The first day was exciting. I loved tasting each juice flavor, and still felt full enough from the day before, not to feel any hunger until the afternoon, when I experienced an hour or so of hunger pangs. The next day went well too, but that night, I was super hungry when I went to bed, and on day 3 (yesterday), I woke up starving! All day yesterday I was hungry, even though I drank all my juice, along with tea, and water. I even went to pick up a seventh juice yesterday evening to stave off the feeling. This morning (day 4), I still feel hungry, but from everything I’ve read, that will start to subside by tomorrow, and day 5-10 should be a lot easier as my body adjusts.

Other than hunger, though, I feel great! My mind has been clear, I have a lot of energy, and I’ve noticed that my sinuses are clearer than I can remember them being in a long time. I did weigh and measure myself at the beginning of the cleanse, and I’ll share those results in my second post, to go up at the end of the juice feasting next week. Have you ever done a 10-day juice fast? What are your tips?

Keep it up, Jodi! I've done a couple of 10 day juice feasts and it truly does help to reset the body. Wait till you taste a strawberry or a piece of mango in the days after. It'll be the most delicious thing you ever tasted.

    Thanks, Linda!

Thanks for the encouragement, Nora. I'm currently researching how to transition back to solid foods. Thinking maybe just fruits and vegetables for the first day or two. Let me know if you have any recommendations!

I don't think this is so healthy. Lets do weight watchers . You were so successful with that program. I know I sound like your Mother and if she hasn't said anything it is because she is afraid to make waves and we are a little bit afraid of our daughters … and you can put that in your blog.
    Love you lots

I love you, Auntie Marsha. I told my mom what you wrote and she started laughing. Weight Watchers did work very well for me, and this is just a 10-day challenge — without other changes after it's over, I won't be able to sustain the weight loss. I know that! Keep worrying about me though, it makes me feel very loved.

Jod,You need some fiber to fill you up. Juicing removes the fibrous parts of the veggies and fruits. You may want to try a smoothie version where the whole veggie is used…or compliment with snacks of raw veggies and fruits. I did a cleanse recently and my doc said no way to no protein so i included lean proteins with my fruits and veggies… I felt great after about a week!

Unless you live practically next door to the Juice Box and have a free hook up for juice there, I wonder why someone wouldn't just invest in a juicer if they were going to embark on this diet. Regardless, you have more willpower than I. In college, a friend talked me into a potato diet. Pure potato, no toppings. All I got was sick and tired of potatoes. I don't think I lasted through day 3. But you know, your juice looks much healthier than potato.

Not sure I would be able to last very long!! See how many other people have tried a juice fast on Wayin! http://www.wayin.com/#!/answer

Thanks for the tips, Ash. I think that kind of cleanse makes a lot of sense but since I've committed to only juice for 10 days, I'm going to stick with that! After, I'm going to try to eat cleaner in general.

I am doing a 40-day juice fast right now, which I just started.  I hope you are still on track!  This will be my third.  My first had so many great results such as no longer having hypothryroidism.  I had started eating the way I used to way back when, so I am just wiping the slate clean again.  I am only on day 3.
