Tasty Tuesdays: Best Wedding Venues in Central Texas

1 November 2011 10,163 views 47 Comments

As y’all know, Adam and I recently got engaged. And now, we are planning a wedding! For some background, I’ve never been the type of girl to dream about her wedding day. That said, it will likely be among the most important, not to mention expensive, parties we have ever thrown. And both Adam and I want it to be awesome.

We have started to look at venues. We saw 8 on Saturday, Jessica came with me to see 5 on Saturday (Adam had to get some work done), and we plan to do it all over again this weekend.

Each venue has different selling points. We are obviously taking into consideration availability (we’re looking to tie the knot on a Saturday night in October of next year), location (in town or a “destination” venue outside of the city), amenities (shelter, bathrooms, chairs, tables, etc.), experience throwing/planning weddings (it’s nice to get advice from someone who does this every weekend), etc.

We hope that after visiting the rest of the spots we’re interested this coming weekend, we’ll be ready to make a decision.

I’ve included photos of some of the venues we really like, just to give you an idea of the feel we are going for.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of these venues, or others that you have been to for events and really liked. Here’s the current list of some the venues we are considering:

Austin/Kyle/Driftwood/Spicewood/Dripping Springs

Wimberley

Fredericksburg

Burnet

Just a note for those making suggestions or giving us feedback on these venues (which we appreciate) that we are looking for a place that is affordable and can accommodate 200 people for a ceremony and reception (including dancing).

Thank you!

Add Red Corral Ranch (outside of Wimberly) to the list to check out. B's cousin got married there.

  • jodibart

Thanks, Melissa. That venue looks beautiful, but sadly they are already booked for the dates we are looking at.

Boo. Hrmmmm … how many does Mercury Hall hold? Allen House might work for 200, including the patio. French legation is lovely, but you'll have to rent bathrooms for >100.

  • carlyrenee

It's not on your list, but we're getting married at the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs Mansion in January. It's near West Campus (24th and San Gabriel). So beautiful and the people that run it are amazing. Plus, it has an amazing story/history!

  • jodibart

Mercury looks beautiful, but it was a bit too small, plus they don't have the dates open that we are looking for. We haven't seen the French Legation yet. Are you saying that we will have to rent port-o-potty's? Allen house is a great idea. I'll get in touch :-)

  • Laura

Two suggestions: Flat Creek Winery (beautiful place and they have a restaurant), and Trattoria Lisina/Duchman Winery in Driftwood.

  • jodibart

I used to take swing dance classes there and I love that venue. Adam likes it too. However, they were booked for our dates. I bet you are super excited for your big day, Carly!

  • jodibart

Both really great suggestions, Laura. We did visit Duchman Winery this weekend and it is beautiful. I'll send a note to Flat Creek as well.

    Legation — yes.
Seriously … call me. I just did this research 18 months ago! ::grin::

Didn't see my recommendation of Kindred Oaks in Georgetown on your list. Just sayin'

  • jodibart

I want to take you out for some drinks and pick your brain. I'll email soon :-)

  • jodibart

Kindred Oaks was booked on our preferred dates, Norm.

    Bummer.

The Plant in Kyle might work. Or Arnofsky Farms

  • jodibart

Great thinking, Carla. We have reached out to the folks at the Plant at Kyle but haven't heard back. I will try again. Arnofsky Farms told us they aren't renting out the barn right now.

Festival Hill, Round Top, TX the website doesn't do this place justice. Not cheap, but super special indeed. Magical even.

This Friday, I'm in a wedding out at Star Hill Ranch in Bee Cave. They're having about 250 guests, I think.  I haven't seen the venue yet, but remind me, and I can report back!

  • jodibart

Thanks, Wendy. It looks very nice, but maybe with the chapel isn't the perfect spot for a Jewish wedding?

  • Sarah Lynton

Have y'all checked out Vista West Ranch in Dripping Springs?  Beautiful venue with tons of personality!

  • jodibart

Looking forward to hearing your impressions!

  • jodibart

It looks amazing but unfortunately, they are booked for every Saturday through early December  2012 so it won't work for us.

I love Laguna Glorida…have you looked there?

It's such a beautiful venue but it's not inexpensive, and I've heard they are restrictive in terms of vendors, and I think we want a more laid back feel.

  • SHanna

What about Star Hill Ranch?  or Becker Vineyards?  Luckenbach is a great location. It makes a for a fun wedding.

  • Natalie

We got marred at the French Legation in early October with about 200 guests and had a wonderful experience with the staff and the venue was gorgeous. Plus, it was easily the most affordable location we looked at. The only thing I would say is that you will have to get port-a-potties for that many people since there is only one bathroom on site. I'd be glad to talk to you more about it if you want. So excited for y'all!!!

Have you looked at Green Pastures?  We had our reception there with 200 guests.  It was beautiful and the food was wonderful.  When we were getting quotes, it was less expensive than Salt Lick.

What info did you get about Montesino Ranch? I'm not ready to email them yet…but it looks beautiful!

  • jodibart

Thanks for the tips, Shanna. Right now, none of those are on the short list, but that could always change.

  • jodibart

Hey Natalie – The French Legation used to be inexpensive but now, they charge over 2k just for the venue — forget renting tents, port-o-potties, etc.

  • jodibart

Thanks, Cynthia. I'm surprised to hear it was less expensive than Salt Lick. Of course, they handle pricing differently than Salt Lick so its hard to compare. Unfortunately, Green Pastures wasn't available for the dates we are looking for so we had to cross it off the list.

  • jodibart

It IS beautiful and definitely worth looking into. The rates vary from $2500 – $4900 for a weekend rental. You should shoot them a note to get more information!

I really liked ArtHouse, you are supporting the arts and you can't beat the downtown vibe and the screen they provide. Plus, the whole ceremony/reception can be held in one venue. We loved having our wedding there!
