Tasty Tuesdays: Best Austin Restaurant in a Strip Mall
I love a good restaurant in a strip mall. The sleeper restaurant. You know, the one someone told you to go to and when you’re there, you start to feel like you discovered it?
My friend and fellow food blogger Michelle of Foodie is the New Forty loves Al Sur: “What it lacks in showiness it makes up for in heart….The crowning glory, the crepas de cajeta. Fantastic crepes with just the right amount of egg-y flavor, adorned with creamy cajeta, pecans, and vanilla ice cream. Heaven.”
Two of my favorite storefront spots are pictured below. They are Bountiful Bakery and Cuban Sandwich Cafe. Both of these spots just happen to be perfect for a mid-week lunch, and with Bountiful in Southwest Austin and the Cuban Cafe in Northeast Austin, hopefully one of these is convenient enough for you to check out soon with some colleagues or friends.
Bountiful Bakery has something for everyone — whether you are craving the comfort of mac ‘n cheese, or a big salad with lots of stuff in it, they have you covered. They also have the most amazing cookies and desserts, and there are always sweet samples to pick at while you wait to order. Also, be sure to fill out a card with your contact information so they can send you a coupon for a free meal during your birthday month!
Head over to Cuban Sandwich Cafe, located East of I-35 in between the 51st St. and 290E exit for wonderful sandwiches and pastries. The most killer dish I’ve had at Cuban Sandwich Cafe is this cubano sandwich, made with fresh bread baked from scratch, ham, swiss cheese, pork, mayo, mustard and pickles. Try a bite of this sandwich and you will be saying to yourself (or aloud), “day-am.” It’s that good.
