The Tigress Brings Out the Feline

9 September 2010 2,916 views 10 Comments

I’m kicking myself for writing this because The Tigress is the kind of place that makes you feel like you “discovered it” and are in on a secret. Add to that the fact that it’s tiny and to be honest with you, I don’t want anyone to go except for my friends.

That said, I also want to share my love for The Tigress with the world so that everyone can experience it’s sweetness and so it will continue to thrive.

Located on North Loop, the only signage for The Tigress is this little square of a sign on it’s glass door.

The first time I entered The Tigress, I was with Austin Chronicle photographer Todd V. Wolfson. It was 4 p.m., 106 degrees, and I was melting. On meeting Pam, the owner of The Tigress for the first time, she immediately offered access to her walk-in, so that I could cool off. Pam is my kind of gal.

I asked Pam for her most refreshing drink. The menu consists of classic cocktails for $7 each and The Tigress also offers beers on tap for $5/pint. She quickly made me up a Moscow Mule – vodka, lime juice, and Fever-tree ginger beer. I noticed this was the only drink on the menu made with vodka.

Have you noticed that lately vodka is to hard alcohol as chardonnay is to white wine? The Moscow Mule is described on the menu as “a promotional drink for Vodka; wonderfully tasty and refreshing.”

Next up, I tried the Pegu Club - gin, orange liquor, lime juice, and Angostura Bitters. It’s funny because it tastes exactly like grapefruit without any grapefruit at all. The drink is named after a British Colonial Club located in Burma in the 1920’s.

Todd was inspired by the shape of the glass and I was inspired by the alcohol in my blood ;-)

I went back to The Tigress on another night with my friend Monica and her brother Frank. I ordered takeout from Foreign and Domestic down the street and picked it up on the way. The Tigress doesn’t serve food but they do welcome customers to order in food or bring their own.

That night, Pam handed over the keys to The Tigress to Jason, who manages Little City coffee shop on Congress downtown. She occasionally invites guest bartenders to take over the bar. Co-instructor of the upcoming Tipsy Tech class on the history of cocktail mixology, Lara Nixon, posted her guest bartending menu on her blog.

That same second trip to The Tigress felt like a visit to my very own Cheers when I ran into Apron Adventures‘ Lindsay and Kelly S., Austin community manager of Yelp. Continuing to work my way through the menu, I tried Dale Degroff’s Casino Royale - gin, orange juice, maraschino, lemon juice, and a splash of champagne, and a Sidecar – brandy, Paula’s Texas Orange, fresh lemon.

So far, I haven’t found a drink at the Tigress that made me feel catty.

Thanks for posting this review of the Tigress, which would be my neighborhood bar if I actually lived in the neighborhood. Every time I go in there I feel like it is a little Tipsy Tech reunion and it warms my heart (or maybe that is just the whiskey kicking in…)
