12 September 2010 9,786 views 11 Comments

UPDATE from the organizers (11/1/10): The event is from 11am-8pm, family- and dog-friendly. We have great live music all day with Junior Brown, Gary Clark Jr, J. Roddy Walston and The Business, Ruby Jane, English Teeth and Noise revival Orchestra. Gypsy Picnic is free to the public, and all of the trailers will be serving sampler sizes for $3 or less.

Dear trailer-owning and trailer-loving friends,

On Saturday, Nov. 6 from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m., Austin’s Auditorium Shores will be home of the Gypsy Picnic, its first large-scale trailer food festival. From now until Tuesday, Sept. 21, interested food trailers can apply here. Trailers pay $300* to participate and get to keep all their profits from the day.

VENDING REQUIREMENTS
• Unit must be readily moveable.
• Must have been in operation in Austin for at least three months prior to the event date.
• Must not be a solely catering unit.

Gypsy Picnic is produced by C3 Presents and Tiffany Harelik of the Trailer Food Diaries. According to the organizers:

“This one-day event will gather the cream of the trailer crop in one convenient location, allowing attendees to easily sample from dozens of trailers. The Gypsy Picnic is also a cook-off for the trailer chefs. The Gypsy Picnic Trailer Cook-off panel of expert judges will conduct blind tastings to select the very best in a variety of categories. The public gets their chance to weigh in with an overall Fan Favorite and other awards. We’ll also be serving up great live tunes all day from the music stage. Admission to Gypsy Picnic is free to the public, and we anticipate about 10,000 attendees over the course of the day.”

I’m looking forward to helping taste the critics’ choice category entrants as one of the judges in the blind tasting.

The layout of the Gypsy Picnic will mirror the location of the trailers throughout Austin. There will be six different vending areas, each representing a different geographic location. Areas will include East Austin, South Congress, Southside (south of the river – not on S. Congress), Downtown, UT Campus, and Outliers/Rovers.

Each trailer vendor will serve a minimum of two  and a maximum of three menu items that best represent their style. The goal is to allow attendees to sample several trailers. Each trailer food vendor will also be asked to offer at least one item at a smaller size — a “tasting” portion — at no more than $3.

I’m so excited to be a part of this event that will bring many of the delicious Austin food truck offerings together. It will be a great opportunity to celebrate the entrepreneurial and creative spirit among the Austin food community and easily sample lots of offerings in one place.

My hope is that the organizers are also making an effort to promote this event through grassroots outreach to some of the Mexican and Tex-Mex food trailers that have been serving delicious tacos, sopes, menudo, and more, for years.

*Depending on power needs, power may cost an additional $75-$300, if reserved by early October. There is also a $25 entry fee for each critics’ choice cook-off category. Public choice categories are free of charge.

This is going to be so fun! What a great idea to offer bite-sized portions for less than three bucks. See you all there!

As a food lover, I would like to attend this festival. But with great sorrow I say that I was not present there for some unavoidable circumstances. I will make it next year.
