Hearty Vegetable Soup and Pressed Sandwiches

People sometimes ask me about  my favorite restaurant. Lately Adam and I tell them, “at your house or my house.” We just love enjoying home-cooked meals with friends. For my birthday dinner, I asked my friend Jill if we could come over to her apartment in New York.

She made a delicious recipe from Ina Garten’s Back to Basics, “Pappa al Pomodoro,” a hearty vegetable soup.

Jillian and Paul have a sandwich press, and after enjoying wonderful pressed sandwiches made with pancetta, gruyere, and homemade aioli, I’m thinking we need one.

Jillian and Paul recently got engaged in Napa, and opened a bottle from one of the vineyards they visited on that trip — a Pine Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon. It was a deep burgandy color and tasted berry-licious.

After polishing off the bottle, we got creative with feline accessory ideas and soon after, called it a night.

Honestly, Jillian and Paul's cat almost makes me want one. He is the BEST! Such a sport.

Jilly – You write the best thank you notes, and yours came yesterday! I loved the image of us having dinners together regularly, you and I calling it a night at 10 p.m., and Adam and Paul chatting late into the night. My only edit, can we move our “hit the sack” time to 9:30 p.m.

Jodi, that soup looked awesome. I have that book and will have to try that recipe. And since you and Adam love homemade meals, you'll have to come over one of these days!

Name the date, Shef! You know we would love to.
