Tasty Tuesdays: Best Fried Chicken in Austin

18 May 2010 1,830 views View Comments

I’m slightly fried chicken obsessed this week due to a visit to Eastside Showroom for their Monday night fried chicken last night and an upcoming birthday party that will feature “the best” fried chicken and biscuits I’ve ever had in my life.*

I’m now on the hunt to find the very best fried chicken in Central Texas. I have votes on Twitter for Cipollina, The Highball, and Royer’s Round Top. I’m interested in hearing where the best fast food fried chicken can be found — Popeye’s, KFC, Church’s, Chick-fil-A? Has anyone tried the chicken and waffles at Lucky J’s? How about Threadgills, Hoovers, and Shady Grove? Top Notch? The Mighty Cone? Looking forward to hearing about your faves!

I'm with Foodie/Forty -- Church's is the bomb. It's been at least 3 years since I last had it, but their skin is about as crispy as it gets.

For my money, Lucky J's or Hyde Park Grill (Tony's fried chicken special on Monday & Tuesdays) take the top honors. Delicious!

Eastside Showroom has a rockin' fried chicken special on Monday nights. For a quick fix, Chick-fil-A does the trick. Has anyone tried the fried chicken at Max's Wine Bar? I'd be curious to hear about it.

For fast food fried chicken, I admit to being a Church's girl, with Popeye's having the edge if I'm in a spicy mood.

Beyond that, I really don't know. I don't really think of this as "fried chicken," exactly, although that's what it technically is - the buttery bits of fried goodness on top of the Gourdough's Mother Clucker is pretty awesome. But fried chicken on the bone is a whole different matter, and one in which I'm no expert (but I'm open to changing that!).
  • Golden Chick in Oak Hill FO SHO! :)
  • It's been like 2 decades, but I'm certain it hasn't changed: Top Notch!

For fast food fried chicken, Popeye's can't be beat in my opinion. But then, I kind of grew up around New Orleans so I'm biased. I have yet to have fried chicken in any place in town that made me stand up and applaud. I'm talking good ol' fried pieces on the bone, not some fancy version of fried chicken (although, I did much like the chicken and waffles at Paggi House when I had it about a year ago).

For an alternative fried chicken, I'm such a fan of Chick-Fil-A, but it's not the same as good ol' southern fried chicken pieces, you know?

Popeye's is my fave of the chains as well. Love their biscuits too. However, what do I know - I was born in Canada and grew up in MD! I wonder if Paggi House still has chicken and waffles. I heard their cheese plate is good. Chick-Fil-A is such a great fast food alternative. I love that place! And their waffle fries? Yum!
  • fried chicken is a tough one to do right evidently. most of the usual place are awful (kfc, church's, with popeyes being the one i would choose out of those.)
had threadgills years and years ago and it wasn't too bad. i really am not impressed with Hoovers although most around here seem to think it is amazing lol.

They love their Hoover's over there at the Law School. I remember that! Say hi to everyone for me, Charles!

The only fried chicken I've eaten in years, is Lucky J's, on the Tasty Up Trailer Tour. I was not a big fan of this chicken, and found it to be dark and taste slightly burnt. The Grove Wine Bar has fried chicken (I think on Fridays) and it looks fantastic, but I have not tried it.

I need to add Grove Wine Bar to my list. I also haven't heard very good things about Lucky J's but haven't been myself. Thanks, Carla!
