Royito’s: Another Austin Food Trailer, Another Cranky Post
I know I shouldn’t do this but I cannot resist poking a little fun at Royito’s, the new food trailer opening on W. 6th Street just East of Lamar.
The trailer is having a soft opening this week and word is that GSD&M Idea City co-founder Roy Spence himself is handing out free breakfast tacos and jars of his spicy sauce from the airstream through Friday of this week from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. (or until they run out).
I stopped by today on my way back to the office from a doctor’s appointment — it was 10:30 a.m. and they were fresh out of tacos after giving away 200.
One of the more chuckle-inducing things about the trailer beyond the silly name is the huge mug of Roy as the “face” of the brand. I’ve never met the guy but he kind of resembles Bill Clinton or some other slick politician with that coiffure. Here’s a close-up:
More than 600 jars of Royito’s were sent out to GSD&M clients as gifts in 2008, according to a Royito’s Facebook page. And, the truck is located in the parking lot of GSD&M Idea City. However, the Austin Business Journal reports that Royito’s is wholly owned by Spence and is not affiliated with GSD&M. Hmmm.
Anyway, I look forward to trying the breakfast taco tomorrow morning on my way to work. The regular price for them will be $2 each for tacos that come with two ingredients a piece. Beyond the hot sauce, I’ll report back on the handmade flour tortillas, a nice touch that makes me hopeful Royito’s will live up to the self-promotional hype.
