Serve ‘Yo Self
You know when you visit a business and you can immediately feel the love that went into creating it? Berry Austin is that kind of place.
From the outside, it looks like any other yogurt business that has been popping up in every Austin shopping center. I figured it was a corporate chain.
I ended up at Berry Austin on impulse. Driving back from hiking at Turkey Creek with my dog Lucy and friends Katie and Stacy, we were about to drive past it when I suddenly called out, “turn right!”
As we walked in the door one of the owners and I recognized each other and I didn’t realize until later that it was Jeffrey Trigger, former manager of the Driskill and Mansion on Turtle Creek hotels. His wife, Kathy Steele, is an artist and the true heart and soul behind Berry Austin.
Kathy’s art is everywhere in Berry Austin — from the mosaic self-serve yogurt wall to the “Employees Must Wash Hands Before Returning to Work” collage in the bathroom. Each table is covered with fun and Austin-ey pictures and words and dividing walls are filled with compact discs.
The yogurt recipes are created by Kathy and they are delicious. I ended up going to Berry Austin two days in a row and while I got the tart/berry mix both times, the other flavors were tasty as well (ask an employee for sample cups).
Berry Austin is one of those places where you serve yourself yogurt and toppings and they weigh the cup and tell you what the damage is. I was relatively conservative with my yogurt, fresh fruit, and dark chocolate chip toppings and each day totaled out at around $3.
Berry Austin is all about fun. They are clearly interested in getting to know their customers and going above and beyond. I’m now a fan of theirs on Facebook and also follow them on Twitter. You should become a fan too. If they get 1,000 fans by Feb. 14, they will offer a buy one get one free deal for all of their fans.
As I was nosing around on their Facebook page I noticed they have an “I Spy” game you can play to find a list of items in the colored mosaic wall. While it’s just for fun, they will time you if you want the glory of being listed on Facebook. It also seems like a great first date activity for those who are more awkward in the conversation-making department. If you play, report back!
