Dim Sum in the Heart of Texas

2 February 2010 2,010 views 18 Comments

I’m not a Dim Sum expert. However, I used to live in New York and had the chance to go to some of the best spots and always enjoyed my experience. I’m a pretty omnivorous eater and have enjoyed almost everything I’ve tried. The exception would be chicken feet. I have a hard time choking those down.

Anyway, a group of 14 of us made a reservation at Fortune in Austin’s Chinatown Center for Christmas Day. While the waiters were all very nice, it was next to impossible to get enough food to go around and then we couldn’t get them to clear our plates so we ended up bussing them ourselves. While we enjoyed the food we did try, there were lots of options that we didn’t see until the very end when we had already filled up on other things. Also, they didn’t provided sauce bowls or set-ups like we have had at other dim sum restaurants.

I went back a couple weeks later with Michelle of Foodie is the New Forty and a group of nine other friends including Rachel and Logan from Boots in the Oven, Kristi of Austin Farm to Table, and Carla from Austin Urban Gardens, among others. of our friends.

I wanted to give Fortune another try because I keep hearing that their Dim Sum is the best in Austin and since Xmas Day was so crazy busy, I wanted to see what it would be like on a regular Sunday brunch.

Michelle made a reservation for our table and asked that we sit “near the kitchen.” GENIUS.

The plates were coming promptly while the dirties were whisked away without a word and service was excellent all around.

Some of our favorite dishes were the crispy pork belly, duck, white square cakes (taro maybe?), steamed dumplings, pork buns, and sauteed greens.

We were stuffed to the gills but when I saw some beautiful souffles being carted past, we had to flag them down. It ended up that it was an almond milk tea with a baked souffle crust on top. It was good but more pleasing to the eye than to the taste buds.

The tab came out to $15 a person including tip which I thought was an amazing deal since our group of friends didn’t hold back!

After I met a friend at Walnut Creek Park to take our dogs for an off-leash hike. It’s only a five minute drive away from Chinatown Center and highly recommended.

The next day, I met my friend  Natalie for lunch at Get Sum Dim Sum. She ordered for me and we each had their Get Sum combo ($8) with two dumplings from their top ten list, a steamed pork bun, and a sesame ball. While everything tasted good, the menu is pretty vanilla and definitely caters to a more Americanized audience than Fortune and other traditional Dim Sum spots in town. However, it’s nice to know this spot is there when craving a dumpling or a bun at a day other than Sunday (the traditional Dim Sum serving day).

fortune has dim sum on their weekday dim sum buffet. (you can also choose to order ala carte dishes but you'd have to know what you want since there are no carts being pushed around). its $6.95 (buffet, ala carte is extra), which is a better deal IMO than get sum dim sum.

I really like Chinatown-Mopac for their weekend dim sum. You should give it a try some time! I've never been to Fortune, but it's way better than Get Sum Dim Sum.

    Good to know!

I've got to try that spot. I love Chinatown on MoPac for their jade dumplings. You have to call in advance because they take forever to make.

Might I suggest T&S on North Lamar. I was there a few months back for my first Dim Sum experience and it was superb and the reviews of this place do no lie. A group of my friends and I went there on a Sunday at high noon. The place was packed, but the service was quick and the food was HOT. Give it a try!
