Vaquero Cocina: Cowboy Cuisine with Central American Flair

While I mentioned Vaquero Cocina as a great place in Austin to pick up BBQ on KGSR a couple weeks ago, I wanted to share a little more with you and finally settled on giving this lovely trailer it’s own post.
Vaquero Cocina is among the trailers on the South Congress strip — in the middle of a block that boasts Mighty Cone on one end and Hey Cupcake on the other.
I’d been hearing really good things about Mambo Berry, the natural frozen yogurt trailer directly north of Vaquero Cocina, and …

Last-Minute Grocery Store Blues

Last night, Adam and I began putting together dinner at around 8 p.m. I had picked up tilapia and these huge beautiful artichokes at Whole Foods at lunch yesterday. We decided to make oven-roasted artichokes and mango salsa with sauteed fish. We were missing a few simple ingredients — limes and cilantro for the salsa, lemons for the artichokes.

Tasty Tuesdays: Sweet Austin Treats to Beat the Heat

Great minds must think alike because Yelp sent an e-mail today titled “Lick the Heat Away with Yelp” and the Daily Texan now seems to have a “Tasty Tuesdays” feature. Bryan, Andy and I talked last Thursday about the topic for this week’s Tasty Tuesday and KGSR show on Thursday and we settled on “Sweet Austin Treats to Beat the Heat.”
For me, the ultimate Austin summer treat is a gelato or sorbetto from Teo on 38th Street. My favorite is the peanut butter nutella and I also love their real …

Solar Cooking: Four Meals in the Four Corners

When I noticed that Nancy and Jim have a solar oven, I was obsessed with having the chance to try it out. They use the Global Sun Oven, the best brand according to the sites that I read. It’s not cheap on the company website but I saw it for $240 on Amazon. You can also make your own sun oven if you are adventurous and handy.
When cooking in a solar oven, it’s important to allow lots of time for it to cook. All we did today was mix together …
