Lemonade Stand Time

The summer weather is upon us in Austin and I just learned that tomorrow is Lemonade Day. Kids sign up with a parent and some friends to host a lemonade stand around town and are provided with a guide. The goal is to teach kids about entrepreneurship and managing money and they are encouraged to open a bank account and donate some of the profits at the end of the day.

There are prizes awarded for tastiest lemonade and best stand. I’m hoping that it doesn’t rain tomorrow and plan to check out some of the Austin kid’s offerings. To find a stand near you, check out this great Google Map.

lemonade signLast weekend we were in NYC and the city was experiencing it’s first heat wave of the season. On Saturday, we went to Central Park and hung out on a blanket chatting with friends. On Sunday, we walked around Brooklyn with our friend Lenny — from Cobble Hill to Brooklyn Heights and the Brooklyn promenade to DUMBO and then Carroll Gardens. The temperature was in the 90s and the sun was out in full force.

As we reached a midpoint of our walk, we encountered a small girl setting up her lemonade stand. At 25 cents a cup, we figured that this was a bargain in Brooklyn — especially since the brownstone she was selling it out of was surely worth two or three million (dollars, not cents).

lemonade girlShe was adorable and had written “lemonade” on her head in red lip liner. We couldn’t read what was on her forehead advertisement at first but she told us she had applied it in the mirror and didn’t realize it was backwards. The cynic in me thought this might have been a marketing ploy masterminded by a parent — after all, these are tough times for everyone, right?!

The weather tomorrow should be hot and a bit overcast — fingers crossed that it doesn’t rain. I plan to find some lemonade stands around town to try out and would love tips if you know a good one! I’ll also be following Austin Lemonade Day on Twitter and hopefully they will be giving shout outs to the tastiest and most creative stands.
