Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge

The Refuge, located 10 minutes from Flat Creek helps protect the nesting habitat of the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler and Black-capped Vireo. The Shin Oak Observation Deck is set in the middle of the Black-capped Vireo habitat. It will have been closed for 3 weeks to protect the newly arriving vireos until the day before our trip (bring your binoculars!). There are trails throughout the refuge including one that offers views of Lake Travis.

The berry farm is located about 40 minutes from Flat Creek and the strawberries will be ripe for the picking. According to the website, the berry picking season is from March to April. The strawberries are $2.50 per pound and they take cash or check only. There is also a cute petting zoo on site.

Cheese, wine, berries and pies? If there is a heaven, those are some of its key components!

Can’t wait, Jodi. Thanks for setting this up.

Don’t forget the hiking….that’s how we can do it all with none of the guilt! Looking forward to it.

  • Chance

Wish we could join! but I work on Saturdays. Let us know how Flat Creek is since it is one of the few local wineries I have yet to visit.

  • double tonic

Jod, I’m trying my best to FORGET the hiking part! Work with me here ….

But seriously … any chance we can get a group interested in berry picking after the winery? I’ll ask some friends, too, but if anyone out there wants to berry-pick, let’s talk carpool.

  • Jodi

I’m planning on doing all 4 activities. But I’m crazy like that.

  • McKinzey

Doing all 4 isn’t crazy, count me in! And really, pie happy hour…..it’s like someone randomly picked two items from a list of The Greatest Things on Earth and then made something even greater. Can’t wait.
