Snacks by SW

This will be the first year that I have a badge to check out SXSW. I’m super excited about it but also nervous about all of the choices, walking, lack of sleep, and of course proper nutrition!

I fully plan to take advantage of the free food and drinks at parties, as well as the awesome deals from Yelp. However, my Jewish mama didn’t raise no fool. Last night, I stopped off at Whole Foods on my way home from work to pick up some snacks.

Here is a photo of some of my goodies:

snack by swWhen shopping for good grab-n-go snacks, keep in mind the following:

  • Portability (not too heavy/not too big)
  • Serving size (just bring enough for the day – ziplocs are great for this)
  • Non-perishable (don’t bring anything that needs refrigeration or can be smushed easily)

What I bought:

  • Clif Bars
  • Clif Z Bars
  • Whole grain bread
  • Almond butter/peanut butter
  • Bonne Manan prserves (strawberry)
  • Bananas, Apples, Oranges, Pears, Grapes
  • Baby carrots
  • String cheese
  • Pretzel sticks
  • Ginger cookies
  • Tamari almonds, walnuts, cashews, dried cranberries

For quick snacks, the bulk bins are your friend! I picked up the nuts and dried fruit separately and then mixed them together. I figured that was cheaper than buying a trail mix and ensured that I liked all the ingredients. Adam likes Clif Bars as a meal replacement but there are a LOT of calories if it’s just for a snack — that’s why I always keep Z Bars around.

I also carry a water bottle with me and refill it as I drink. Gotta stay hydrated, even if it is rainy and gray outside! What kind of food/drink do you plan to rely on during SXSW (or other 24-7 type of event)?

I think it's adorable that my mom (above) called it SWXS -- Southwest Excess is a very fitting name!

Good idea to bring snacks -- the convention center offerings are pretty limited. I need to pack some fruit and trail mix type snacks myself. And get a big thermos for coffee. Starbuck's $2.50 12-ounce doesn't cut it for me!
