Chocolate for Everyone, Including Vegans

I met Betsy and Laura for dinner at Daily Juice Cafe on 45th and Duval. For dessert, we shared three delicious chocolate truffles made with raw cacao. Raw foodies LOVE cacao. Most of the folks we met at Daily Juice had this wild eyed, intense look that I think is attributed to eating so much cacao. Cacao contains phenylethylamine which is said to increase focus, alertness, and keep you happy.

Cacao is a major source of magnesium and over 80% of Americans are chronically deficient in the mineral. This may very well explain why women crave chocolate before or during their menstrual period. Magnesium balances brain chemistry and builds strong bones.

Each of the truffles are made with a base of cocoa butter, cocoa powder, agave nectar, extra virgin raw coconut oil, vanilla powder and Himalayan sea salt. The heart-shaped truffle is called spicy sexy and includes figs, cashews, and cayenne pepper on top. The round truffle is a macaroon with dried coconut. Our favorite was the rectangular one called goji macadamia with rehydrated goji berry puree.

choccakeContinuing with the chocolate theme, we celebrated Adam’s dad Lenny’s birthday on Friday night with a small chocolate mousse cake from the 1886 at the Driskill. It was delicious but I’m not sure if I received what I initially ordered. My favorite cake has always been the Chocolate Caramel Mousse Cake. This seemed different — less layers and maybe less cake. Also, I didn’t taste the caramel as strongly as I remembered. Either way, it was still close your eyes and let the chocolate melt on your tongue wonderful.
