If Pie for Breakfast is Wrong I Don’t Want to be Right

cakeAfter reading Mike Sutter’s Statesman post on Pie Slice bakery on South Lamar, I couldn’t wait long to give it a try. Since it was my turn on Friday to pick up breakfast tacos for my colleagues at Fleishman Hillard, I decided to try out their $0.99 tacos made with house-made flour tortillas.

Pie Slice is a small store ront on the west side of Lamar between Mary and Oltorf. The flashing sign and arrow helped me find it without any problem.
Pie Slice has been open since Dec. 12. The owners have experience at Chez Zee and The Headliners Club and have brought together six or so of their family members to work there. The family originally hails from Monterrey, Mexico.
keylimeThey begin serving breakfast tacos at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. on weekends; they close at 10 p.m. Monday-Saturday and at 7 p.m. on Sunday. For lunch or dinner they serve pizza (made with homemade crust), pastas, salads, sandwiches, and soups. The blueberry or raspberry salads were recommended to me along with the Maytag Blue Cheese Pizza.
Sweets and desserts include cakes, pies, brownies, cookies and muffins. They offer a free cookie (chocolate chip or oatmeal) with any coffee — a tough offer to pass up as a small coffee by itself is more inexpensive than a cookie.
Pies and cakes are served whole or by the slice and they will also take special order with 24-hours notice. The staff recommended Coco Tres Leches (Whole $35.95, Slice $4.95), Death by Chocolate, Coffee Pie (Whole $17.95, Slice $4.25), Key Lime Pie (Whole $17.85, Slice $4.25), and White Chocolate Strawberry Cheesecake (Whole $39.95, Slice $5.35).

tacos_003I abstained from pie and cookies — this time — and brought 26 breakfast tacos back to the office to share with my colleagues. All tacos are 99 cents but they charge 15 cents for cheddar cheese or 25 cents to add Nacho cheese. They were all delicious but everyone raved about the Veggies and Egg Taco that included spinach, potato, and tomato. Other options include Ham and Egg, Sausage and Egg, Bacon and Egg, and Potato and Egg. They also offer a Miga Plate for $3.99.

Pie Slice is a takeout kind of joint, just a simple storefront with limited seating.I plan to order one of their cakes or pies at my next opportunity and will definitely go back for the yummy and inexpensive breakfast tacos.

Ahh, breakfast taco Friday. It's a shame you weren't Pancake Friday or Bagel Friday, as I don't like eggs. However, some FHers were kind enough to bring me special order bean and cheese tacos...and to them, I am eternally grateful :)
