Drink Y’all!

opies signOn Sunday I spent the day in the Texas Hill Country. We started the day at McReynolds Wines where we tasted Mac and Maureen’s delicious and unique wine selection. We then convinced them to hop in the car with us and have lunch at Opie’s BBQ in Spicewood. I had passed Opie’s many times on drives out to Fredericksburg but never stopped to check it out. Opie’s was made famous by the documentary, Barbecue: A Texas Love Story, where Kinky Friedman says that “Jesus Loved Barbecue.” Our waitress was wearing the shirt to prove it.

jesuslovesbbqMac and Maureen brought us some beers to enjoy with lunch and we piled into their Prius (not everyone in Texas drives a pick up you know). Opie’s is pretty big and a nice sized BBQ pit greets visitors at the door. You buy your meat by the pound and Brandon and I got jalapeno sausage, brisket, and ribs. They had three kinds of cobbler to choose from for dessert and we went with the blackberry. Two kinds of beans (butter and pinto), pickles, peppers, and sauces are free on the side but if you want coleslaw or potato salad — that’s extra.
meat and cobblerThe BBQ was really good but what blew me away was the amazing ribs — they were perfectly seasoned and fall-off-the-bone tender. I haven’t had ribs that finger-lickin’ delicious since visiting Kreuz Market in Lockhart a couple years ago.
We were dropped off at Spicewood Vineyards to meet Austin American-Statesman food writer Addie Broyles and some folks from the Austin Food Bloggers group. They spicewoodvinyardshave a delicious Sauvignon Blanc and we also enjoyed a bottle of their Cabernet Claret. Most of the group went inside for wine tasting and a tour of the facility but Brandon, Sunni, Chet and I stayed outside sipping wine, watching the dogs play, and enjoying the beauty of the day. We also played Pictionary. Fellow blogger Lindsay of Apron Adventures fame brought delicious dried fruit and nut bars that went perfectly with the wine.
Sunni, Chet, and their dog Simon drove us back to McReynolds to pick up our car. We gave them some dried cranberries and maple bourbon pecans from Whole Foods to sustain them for the 45 minute drive back to Austin.

We have friends who go to Opie's all the time - we're itchin' to try it out ourselves, especially after this outstanding review!

Opie's is great -- we passed through Spicewood and grabbed lunch there last year. On a recommendation, we added a pork chop to our order. It was the size of a football but a million times tastier. I bought a cooler at the gas station across the street just for the leftovers.

I want to head back out to Spicewood to try RO's Outpost -- reportedly they have excellent cue and pies that rival Royers. And Chowhounders regularly recommend The Backstage as one of the best little-known restaurants around.

I thought Cooper's was amazing but that could be because it was one of my first "food tourist" experiences ever in Austin. I was amazed by the huge bbq pits outside and the idea of buying meat by the pound. In fact, we made the mistake of getting $60 worth because we were so confused when ordering. Opie's and Coopers are pretty similar I think...

That sounds like a lovely time! Have you eaten at Cooper's BBQ in Llano? How do you think they compare?
