Breakfast Tacos and more at The Screaming Goat
Eating a taco from a restaurant that calls itself the Screaming Goat is a daunting proposition as anyone who has overdone it with hot peppers can attest. My thinking was that either the owners have a quirky sense of humor or that they are horrible sadists who were going to make me regret choosing to eat there for the rest of the weekend.
After spending a wonderful morning there followed by a peaceful afternoon at home, I can assure you that you will be smiling happily during and after your meal. Lucy and I walked over to the restaurant from home and she relaxed outside in the sun next to the creek. I was able to keep an eye on her while enjoying the wonderful flavors of the breakfast tacos and stimulating conversation with a new friend.
I ordered one migas breakfast taco in a whole wheat tortilla and one with egg, cheese, bacon and potato in a corn tortilla. They also have flour of course. The five salsa choices are made fresh every day and David, the owner, graciously brought them all out for me to sample. I don’t pretend to be a foodie but can tell you that these salsas were special and David and team clearly puts the love into everything they do.
David said the recipes come from his family in Chihuahua, Mexico. Flavors from spiciest to mild include:
verde a spicy jalapeno sauce with a sweet vinegar taste, green tomatillo, mexicana a traditional red salsa with chile de arbol, roja a mexican salsa with jalapenos, and negra a sweet tomatillo-based black salsa with chile de arbol.
The Screaming Goat has only had it’s name for the past two months. To learn more about the three different name changes, ask David (the owner) or read a bit more about it on the taco journalism blog.
I’ll definitely go back to the Screaming Goat for lunch or dinner. They have a simple menu that includes burgers, salads, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tostadas, tortas, and flautas.
The Screaming Specials (4 p.m. – close for dine in only unless specified) include bring your kids in for a free meal on Monday and watch some football; Tuesday is $2 burger patties. On Wednesday, buy 1 burrito and get 1 free. It’s also MySpace Coupon night. Thursday you can fill your belly with $0.65 flautas and expand your mind with trivia at 7:30 p.m. Friday enjoy a $5.99 burger fries and a drink while making a fool of yourself doing karaoke at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday enjoy $1.50 beef or chicken tacos all day long.
