American as Pizza Pie

For many years, when you went out to dinner in Austin you had one choice to make – BBQ or Tex-mex. When I moved to Austin five years ago from New York City, the food that I missed the most was the pizza. Over the past few years, Austin has seen a flowering of respectable pizza joints throughout the city.
My favorites are spread throughout town so I’m never far from a slice of heaven – Homeslice in South Austin, Salvation in Central Austin, Saccones in North Austin, and Cipollina when I don’t want to get in the car.
If you are new to the blog, be sure to check out my posting on Cipollina pizza.
The word about Homeslice has gotten out so the waits there tend to be very long. I joined my former colleagues from the Law School at Homeslice for lunch on Friday and they were already on a wait when they opened at 11:30 a.m. However, Homeslice is great for a date and they have a wonderful salad menu in addition to all of that mouth-watering pie. I’ve never had a bad slice at Salvation and as I’m writing this, I’m plotting my next visit. The Menfi’s introduced me to Saccones and it has actually been in Austin for a while. Saccones will make you think you are in New Jersey – very authentic.
Two years ago I co-hosted a pizza and beer tasting party so that my friends and I could officially name the best pizza in Austin. The pizza results from that night were as follows:
1. Conan’s 2. Saccones 3. Niki’s 4. Parlor & Southside (tie) 5. Home Slice 6. Frank & Angie’s 7. Rounders 8. Austin’s Pizza 9. Rock ‘n Tomato 10. Brick Oven 11. Totinos
The Home Slice pizza that night was slightly burned and I think that hurt them. Also, Eastside pies and Salvation were not represented and both are delicious. What is your favorite pizza in Austin?
