My wonderful cousin Jami is in town this weekend and we have been having such a fantastic time together! Activities have included a visit to Salt Lick for BBQ, two-stepping at the Broken Spoke, yoga, dress and bike shopping, a three hour Thriller dance workshop, and more.

Last night, we decided to meet Ilyse and her friend Claire at the 76th annual Mediterranean Festival at St. Elias Orthodox Church. Saint Elias Church has been part of downtown Austin since 1932, when the Middle Eastern community built it by hand.

Not Mom’s Apple Pie

Marcia and Rich W. gave me a gift certificate to Williams-Sonoma for my birthday. Marcia, like her daughter Rachel, is a wonderful cook and hostess. I chose a classic deep-dish ceramic pie dish by the renowned French pottery company, Emile Henry.
Today is Yom Kippur, a Jewish High Holy Day and I spent much of the day creating this gorgeous pie — closely adapted from a recipe card I picked up at the store. Pie-making runs in my family but I have never before made a pie with a cheese crust! …

HAAM Benefit Day Kicks Off at Whole Foods

Lucy and I woke up at 5:45 this morning to walk down to Whole Foods to see The Dime Store Poets, one of my favorite Austin bands perform. I think I might have been the only fan crazy enough to get up that early but Lucy and I were in the mood for adventure.

The Lighter Side of Jeffrey’s

Rob and I both recently moved to Clarksville and agreed that we are eager to get to know the ‘hood. When he invited me to join him at Jeffrey’s of Austin for their happy hour I was so excited. First I walked three blocks to his house to pick him up and meet dear little Sally.
